5/16: Shelley Wynter off WAOK

shelley wynter.jpg

WAOK-AM, the news/talk station targeting African Americans on 1380, has dismisssed its moderate/conservative-leaning afternoon talk show host Shelley Wynter after two and a half years.

“I loved WAOK and have nothing bad to say about the experience there,” Wynter said, whose show was dubbed “The Right Side.”

WAOK hasn’t seen much in the way of ratings of late, trumped by the much stronger signal and appeal of Grown Folks 102.5 on the FM dial, where Steve Harvey and Michael Baisden have had a strong impact.

“I believe if we had the same signal as 102.5, we could just as well,” he said. “If someone is looking for a high-quality radio program that reaches out to not only the African American professional but also whites and wants to grow revenue, please give me a call!”

You can contact him at swynter@rainmakersatl.com or at his Web site, www.shelleywynter.com

I had stopped listening to him, too bombastic and extremely tempermental. I know he was attempting to become a black Hannity, Limbaugh or O’Reilly but they have the market cornered. Bye Bye and good riddance!!!

Fred!!!! Here’s your chance!!!! Fred!!!! After listening the last two years I’d say Shelley was more of a Libertarian than a conservative Republican. Okay what will WAOK try now? Liberal talk doesn’t work. Conservative talk doesn’t work. Bring back Rose at least the sports talk was entertaining.

Shelley was the highlight of my evening commute. First they cut back on Rob’s show, move Lorraine to the mornings, and now this. They are losing me as a listener. Tried to listen to Derek who is on now in the afternoon and just couldn’t do it.

Shelley was entertaining some times, but was right on point with the topics that needed to be discussed.

Funny, the station seemed to be doing well, then CBS came in.

I wish Shelley good energy.I thought he was the best on WAOK but WAOK is known to keep those they favor while getting rid of the quality hosts.

I didn’t like how the same callers called in just to disagree with Sheely just because they were called out.People called Shelley rude but Lorraine White is very rude to some callers and she has a very negative energy for women/teeanage girls, for a minister, which is why I deem her as just another fake preacher.

Coz is in New York/Jersey doing mornings. While at a slight lost for words, I do think AOK should just let a producer sit in and give each of the 10 callers who call every day every show an equal share of the 4 hours…LMAO.

Sure Shelley will land on his feet, but LOL at diversity radio in Atlanta. I wanna see that. Oh I forgot, Obama will heal the US.

Farewell to another one of the conservative side’s trophy blacks. Maybe they’ll get lucky and Alan Keyes will get a syndicated show.

I will miss Shelley’s show. It was nice to have a show that offered different opinions and view points from the typical African-American political show. Finally there was a show that didn’t tout the usual “victim” speech, or blame the “white racist system” for all the ills in our community. It will be really interesting to see who they get to fill the time slot on a permanent basis. If it’s someone who subscribes to the theory we’re victims, and fails to lay some of the responsibility of what happens on us, then they’ve lost a listener.

I agree with darkstar3D. WAOK has a history of firing its very best host. People who are thought provoking and entertaining just don’t seem to survive there. Coz Carson, Rose Scott, Rob Redding and now Shelley. If WAOK is to continue in this market, it needs to rid itself of upper management personnel.

This news saddened me. Shelley had the best talk show on WAOK hands down, other hosts on that station can’t hold a candle to him. His intelligent listeners were indicative of how great that show was. I didn’t start listening to WAOK until Shelley came and I won’t be listening now.

WAOK just lost a listener. Shelley was the only intelligent host on that station. His perspective was enlightening and refreshing. I bet they get DB to replace him, which would be more of the same old, same old. More enabling the culture of victimization, less personal responsibility and accountability. I always thought Shelley was too smart for that station anyway. I’m sure he’ll land on his feet. This ruins my afternoon commute as well.

I can’t believe that Shelley Wynter is off the air!! He was AWESOME and always encouraged the listeners to look at things differently instead of the same old ways that do not produce positive results for the community. WAOK has lost a listener. Best wishes Shelley and I can’t wait to find you on another radio station!

WAOK has lost another listener. Shelley was the best thing going for the station. I can’t listen to any of the other shows and the trivial things they talk about. Shelley made you think and I believe the show was definitely a step in the right direction from African American’s who have far too much victim mentality. The show will be missed. I thought the show was actually too good for such a bubble gum station with a horrible signal. I hope Shelley will find his voice again and I hope he knows he built a following out there that will follow him.

Shelley Wynter forgot to add that if anyone is interested in someone who’s not comfortable with his sexuality, then he’s the man they want. To prove how this he will stoop to any level, even sexism and behavior that proudly immitates that of someone who is 12.

You will hear Shelley again, mark my words, whether it will be on another station in the ATL with a stronger signal (i.e. 640 a.m., 920 a.m., 750 a.m.) or on radio one. I can’t beleive WAOK let him go. What the HELL was they thinking. He was even being showcased nationally by going on CNN, which was giving WAOK more publicity. I am about done with this two bit station!!

Damn, I am sick and tired of Black talk radio balking and squawking about the white man.Do all black people have to be on the left? Was it a ratings thing? If it was, I guess you have to get another left winger to spew the victim rhetoric and the phone lines will blow up. Shelly will be missed!!!!

WAOK or Shelly Show did not even show up on the latest rating for pete’s sake! Shelley was a blowhard, he didn’t do his homework at times, was often wrong about topics, and couldn’t hold his temper when corrected or called out for his mistakes. The dial is full of people on the right if one wanted to hear that particular bent. I guess he can now go on Hannity or O’Reilly and compete with Jesse Lee Peterson or Armstong Williams for who can be more anti-black.

I don’t believe that Shelley was let go because of ratings,I believe it had something to do with all the drama that the caller Nicole started with her video on Youtube.

As another poster said Shelley was being called to give his political his views on CNN.Shelley got calls from listeners who tuned in to his show on the internet in other areas of the country.

Even though I didn’t agree with Shelley on everything,I thought he pulled the lid off some of the Black politicians pimping the community by making it seem as if they cared about the people, when they are about self interest.

WAOK has lost this internet listener from New York City…if I wanted to hear Negro, nationalistic, ‘fight the man while sitting on my hands radio”, I would listen to the diatribe that pollutes the airways in New York.

Also, I found listener Nicole criticism of Shelley rather puzzling, when Shelley, since I have been listening, has given her viewpoint and her business a lot of air time…(possibly free of an ad purchase on her part), ran a contest where she won Best Female Listener…and would vouch her positions when other callers would critize her. Would he always agree with her? ‘No.’ And nor should he…his show was on radio…with mandatory breaks and he was a host who had to adhere to his producer.

Best wishes Shelley! Thank you for making radio interesting! Congrats on the door opening for a new and better opportunity. It’s just around the corner.

waok has lost another listener I can see how Shelley would be dismissed from WAOK, as they always seem to fire their best. Its obvious that the station is run by folks who are influenced by things other than talent. There is NO reason why Dr. White is still on the air and Shelley is gone. Dr. White is absolutely terrible as a radio talk show host and is about as fake as they come. WAOK should be ashamed of itself and I hope and pray that Shelley shows his hand and shows them up. I will NOT be listening to WAOK again.

WAOK is a ghetto and stank. The callers are complete idiots that do nothing but spout ignorance and show how small-minded they are. And any station that would give a show to a coon like Derrick Boazman needs to be shut down immediately.

It is amazing what black radio puts on. It appears that all they want to talk about is “how the White man is putting the brother down?” Well, if it weren’t for white men that bought your ancestors from the black slave traders of Africa-aka the tutsi’s and the Zulu’s-you’d have NO radio station at all, no BET, no Bill Cosby and no Mars Corp. No where did you receive a letter stating that you would get 100K a yr for not working. The USA was founded on freedom to choose your own career and not be told like in Russia! If you think Africa is so much better-like Zimbabwe or Mugabelnad-GO! See how much fun it is looking for food and running awayr from bullets. Oh that’s right-the youth already run away from the police and gang/drug violence-just turn on the news. If Africa gives you so much freedom that you can mug and rob and kill anyone you want-then GO! In the meantime, you need to listen to people who are telling you reality. This is America-act like an American or leave. Remember who founded America. and the majority Rules-not the other way around. Make something of yourself and accept responsibility. Don’t blame others for your failure-YOU are the only ones keeping yourselves down. Bill Cosby speaks the truth! Jackson/Sharpton/Farrakhan are not truth tellers and are only in it for themselves. When was the last time THEY gave you a job or gave YOU money? Think about it.

Words cannot describe how this decision will impact the community. The 12-6 lineup with Rob Wilson informing the community on the importance of sound money management (Finance) and Shelley Wynter promoting personal responsibility were invaluable. This decision will have long term ramifications.

I wish Shelley the best and know that he will continue moving forward. As for some of the comments that some of you are making re: WAOK, its hosts, etc are so poisonous that I really do HATE this conversation from AA. No one is crying victim but it seems if you bring up race, slavery, or whatever that you are blaming “OTHERS”. Please people. And then someone has even suggested that we should be happy for the enslavement of Black people OMG…This why I can’t listen to “URBAN” talk radio b/c on both sides of the issue when have some SELF HATING and SICK people.

Why must the station continue to sell itself short with, at best, mediocre, but, oft times, below par talent. It is an affront to the listeners and the community. Quality begats quality. Management must stop playing us so small. Shelley was a thought-provoking talent who did not kowtow to the Atlanta institutionalized, well-connected in-breds who populate city, county and state office. His criticisms were a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale, one-dimensional environment. I have tried to support WAOK, but I can’t any longer.

I won’t be listening to WAOK any longer. While Shelley did at times come unglued on the program in going back and forth with listeners, I did “get” what he was trying to accomplish. Before Shelley, I had not heard such a wide variety of thoughtful topics and guests on WAOK.

Sometimes you need a break from the whole “fight the power” thing, which is ALL that Coz Carson ever gave you (and Derek Bozeman will give you the same). People can knock Shelley for his ‘conservatism’, but he really isn’t a conservative, because he’s all over the place in his views. And that’s perfectly okay with me, because no one should allow themselves to be put into a box by a label. I just think he’d like to think he is a conservative…

Hopefully Shelley will continue to improve upon his on-air etiquette and will land somewhere else. I do think his brand of radio talk show is very necessary in the Black community. I personally have no time for the whole “victimhood” and “blame-everyone-and-everything-else-except-ourselves” thing.

I’m really upset to hear about Shelley’s departure. While WAOK does a pretty good job of taking care of the community, it doesn’t seem to take very good care of some of its host.

Shelley will be SORELY missed. He helped balance out the day.

Finally, I’m a little upset about WAOK not getting a stronger signal. Often I can’t get it where I live as early as 6:00 p.m. This makes no sense.

We all should boycott the caller Nicole’s store. I think it was her fault that Shelley was fired. His show was informative and exciting. I for one will not be listening to WAOK any longer. WAOK,

I’m a 32 year old Atlanta native that would never even think of letting my dial stop on WAOK until about 3 months ago when I just so happen to stop find Shelley Wynters show “The Right Side.” From that moment on could no longer listen to my usual 790 sports talk radio because I had found a talk show that was the most intelligent, no punches pulled, informative talk show on the radio for that time slot and pretty much throughout the day.

And eventhough I never fully agreed with everything Shelley said I “GOT” it. And the more I listened the more it became evident that the younger adults like me were getting it. It it was a viewpoint and a slap in the face that our community and local talk show airwaves so desperately needed.

WAOK, you have set your listners IQ and the community back. You don’t grow a station with shows catering and pandering to the victimized school-of-thought that understandbly and mostly dominates the older generation. You do so by empowering the youth to not even believe in those barriers and thus act accordingly.

With that said, Thanks alot WAOK. I’m back to 790 the Zone.

No offense to Nicole, but I don’t think she has that much pull.

I think the listeners who are upset about this should join in a concerted boycot. I’d say at 2:15 on Thurs. just switch from WAOK. Let them feel it all at once.

Might help to have a few of the regular callers not call in during that entire day.

It is instructive to see the manner in which this change was handled. No info on the website, no response from WAOK management to the website comment section queries, no announcement, … How did we get the word? AJC through Journalist Rodney Ho on Friday 5/16!

Management would be surprised how many people in Atlanta and around the country listen to the station in the 12-6 time slot because of the substantive content while at work. The contrast in the 2-6 slot is particularly stunning based upon topic and content over the past week!!

If you are streaming try WVON - Chicago (Roland S. Martin, also a dynamic male - female duo - Matt & Perri @ 8:00 PM ET) , WOL - D.C., WWRL - N.Y.C. (Coz Carson early mornings). Crickets pooting into a microphone would be better radio than WAOK! Garbage! The entire station is garbage. Nothing but a hot ghetto mess catering to crooked preachers, project skanks, simple-minded porch monkeys, and folks that didnt complete 6th grade….this station will continue to be a joke as long as they allow ignorant people to call in and make outrageous comments. And with the exception of Shelley and Lorraine, everyone on there is a disgrace. Boazman is a damn fool, who shouldnt even be allowed to walk the earth. I am sooooooooooo very disappointed. WAOK has lost yet another listener. Shelley stood head and shoulders above his peers at that station. Although he is passionate in his beliefs, he challenged his listening community to think with thier intellect not with unchecked feelings and emotions. Some resented his ability of forced reasoning. Other open-minded, free-thinking, individuals such as myself, welcomed his style like a breath of fresh air. The doors of WAOK may have closed but I truely believe many many doors will open wide for Shelley. I watched him with pride this past Sunday night on CNN.

I hate that WAOK got rid of Shelley because for me he was just the best on the station and he made a lot of sense.Since they got rid of him I listen to Ed Schultz on the net.

Shelley was about accountability and he showed how some Black Democrats contradicted themselves.I liked how way he dealt with fake revolutionary callers who called being critical of Barack while pretending to support Barack.

Bozeman is a little too ignorant for me at times and he’s just boring,he may mean well but he has a certain target audience.

I don’t like Dr.White or whatever she calls herself, the woman is just too phoney for me and she is just too old to act so naive.

Rob’s show….well, if you cant say anything nice…. Coz was ousted for putting the “chicken eatin” preachers on blast, and now Shelley is gone because the listners just couldnt handle the truth! For all the Shelley fans, I understand your disappointment, but I encourage you to keep in contact w/him via his website, etc. Shelley Shell will be just fine & land on his feet w/a new gig. LOL, IMO, he hustled his way into a job at AOK (remember he used to be a caller) so he’ll get his hustle on again at somewhere else. I don’t know the whole details of the Nicole situation, but for anyone who’s listened to her for any period of time (cause she does call in alot) can tell she has issues. I’m glad Derrick is on now & hopefully will enlighten us more about Atl city government. AOK needs a new format/new hosts & had been needing these for a long time. That’s why their ratings are so low,IMO the signal has little to do w/it. I’ve been a listener since 2002 & I STILL miss Chris Askew (although he’s at WRFG) & Jay McGlauflin (sp) who talked about health. I wish they’d get rid of Lorraine, she brings nothing fresh & I feel she’s a phony as well & her producer or whoever needs to kill it w/all the unnecessary sound effects, it’s annoying & childish. Bev Smith is the saving grace of the station. Personally I’d love to see more hosts who are actually from Atl & know about the history of the city, especially pre-olympics. I think now is the time for listeners of AOK to write them & their parent company & tell them the changes they’d like to see & give them some ideas of what would make for good programming.

WAOK is a damn joke. They get rid of everybody that really try to school folks on what’s happening.Lorraine kisses butt that’s why she is still there because she sure as hell isn’t that great of a host.I just can’t stand her fake butt.

Good Luck Shelley, from no longer listening to WAK radio.

I totally agree! Power talk is so bad that I had to listen sometimes because I could not believe what I was hearing. Yet, WAOK gets rid of the best program they had? No, I did not agree with Shelley most of the time, but it takes guts to take on some of those callers. As for Nicole, lets be fair because we don’t know if she had anything to do with this and I don’t know anything about her Youtube video. I do know she sounded like an extremely emotional, angry black woman all the time. Shelley, we’ll be looking for ya at another, much BETTER venue!

Alicia Thomas Morgan is your typical angry, bitter, know it all “Queen”. For the 6 people that still listen to that pathetic station, I wish you good luck and Godspeed.

I totally agree with you about powertalk it is a joke. Evertime I called the show Dr. White would be quick to cut you off as soon as she was backed into a corner with her weak argument. Later I found that I had to speak all of my points in one breath because as soon as I paused I was dropped. I think that is a poor way to have a conversation. Dr. White cannot carry on a real conversation with facts, the only thing that she will use is heresay, speculation and always the VICTIM role. Shelley on the other would welcome opposing views on The Right Side because he knew that the majority of us are on the left yet he thrived in the opposition never wavering his stance and not just dropping you. WAOK you have lost yet another listner with me. You guys can have this white man keeping us down stuff or maybe Dr. White can just keep having more shows with that prophet/physic/palm reader guy everybody loves.

It’s funny, because I have been wanting to rant about Dr. White’s show for awhile now, but did not want to seem like a “hater”. Something that she claims is the reason for everything. Preachers ripping off poor folks and then the public complains, Dr. White says they are HATING. If we question our black leaders then we are HATING. That prophet she has on her show is suspect just google his name and you will find complaint after complaint I will NEVER forget when she had “Superhead” on her show. Dr. White, the reverend had Superhead on her show, and did not check her ONE time on her actions or the things she had to say. Shelley would at least question his guests and challenge them. WAOK, you should be ASHAMED of yourselves!

I second this - ….any station that would give a show to a coon like Derrick Boazman needs to be shut down immediately. Lorraine’s how is scandulous. Her Thursday guest was mentored by Rev Ike. Check him out online. He’s a scam artist. The same 10 people call each show all day long. Never anyone new.

Well WAOK you’ve just lost another listener, even though I never agreed with Shelly Wynter on every issue I can appreciate the opposing views and opinions of Shelley and his listeners.

In my opinion Rob Wilson’s show is the station’s flag ship and WAOK should consider moving Rob to the 2:00 - 6:00 slot.

Best Wishes Shelley.

OMG! I was out of town when this happened. At first I thought Shelley was on vacation but this week, still no Shelly, I Googled his name and found this website. I will miss Shelley. While I did not agree with everything he said, he spoke the truth about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for folks that look to the government to fix everything in their lives. He also gave a perspective in politics that I had never heard before. African Americans should stop being blindly loyal to a party that has not delivered the promises made during decades of campaign rhetoric.

Good luck with your future endeavors, Shelley. I am sure you will be a success. If you get a satellite radio show, I will be buying my XM converter!

Good work, WAOK. At this point, you probably only have 10 listeners left in the entire city, and they are most likely senile, crackheads, or pulpit pimps. Way to go, WAOK. The voice of the community should be renamed the voice of the stank, skank, and rank.

Say it isn’t so Santa! I can’t believe Shelly’s gone. Now I’m going to be forced to listen to some victimized plantation commentator. I didn’t agree with Shelly on many occasions but he had the courage to bring in guests that were authoritarian on many subjects rather than pretending he was omnipotent. Before Shelly came the only commercials WAOK had were Public announcements, now WAOK actually have some legitimate corporate sponsors. I have listened to this station for years but now I must jump to the FM side and listen to 102.5. I hope WAOK gets some more batteries for their transmitter so they can increase their listening audience. If they don’t have the money, they should ask the DJs on their sister station V103 to donate some of the money they make hosting all those parties on the weekends.

This is a big mistake and Wynter pointed out severe problems in the black community they don’t want to address like the blind following of the Democratic party.

Can’t stand the heat stay in the kitchen black folks, and watch the hispanic community become more prosperous since they don’t have the loyality of being suckered by the Democaps……….

I’ve listened to the show for about 2 years and the same fools called to talk about issues that had nothing to do with race or the white man(a fictional imaginary icon obsessed by radical blacks to offset their failures of themselves by themselves).

Waok signal is so weak like Wynter stated, I can’t get it outside of the perimeter and not at night when their power is downgraded.

CBS is smart enough to be looking for another conservative talk show host that will do fine until he or she slips like Shelley did and begins to let the same locals call in and dominate the conversation. If Shelley had learned to tie up the phone lines until he got more rational callers with news and comments, he would still be there. For the record, Nicole’s Youtube video had nothing to do do with Wynter’s dismissal. Please, lets not give that woman power she does not have LOL. The word on the street is that there were a couple of congressmen who were not too happy with Shelley pushing for folks to run against them, and then giving those same folks air time. If this is true, it means that Shelley was reaching folks. Like him or not, agree or not, I don’t think anyone else on that station has had that type of influence.

Shelley had the best show on WAOK because his talking style was one that showed that Black people are not monolithic.Shelley made a lot of sense.Shelley was a host who added substance as opposed to a host laced with some fake gimmick just to get by.

My store does fine. Yeah, there were many times Shelley mentioned my store on the station, but that bit of free publicity did NOTHING for my revenue. Some of you dawg Black businesses out anyway and don’t even patronize your own. But yes, I did appreciate him mentioning my boutique. AND I told Shelley so. I have talked to Shelley since he was let go and he is doing just fine. He and I are cool. People, stop fighting battles that have not a damn thing to do with you. That is for the groupies. You all are mad at the video and Shelley and I laughed about it. LOL! Go figure! He had no problem with me expressing my opinion. Shelley will be just fine. As I stated before, this is his blessing in disguise. We will hear from him sooner rather than later. But if you really want to do something, then stop bitching on this website and go for the station management. Let them know how you feel about Shelley being let go. Holla!

Shelley was my man and 50 grand but you have to be careful playing with the big dogs.

Apparently Shelley’s comments about David Scott caught the ears of some of Scott’s people and they did some digging.

The story on The Redding News Review is Shelley got fired because he was making negative comments about David Scott while accepting consulting payments from Scotts challenger Deborah Honeycutt.

Read it here - http://www.reddingnewsreview.com/newspages/2008newspages/wynteroutatatlantaswaokam0809100033.htm

I am not going to miss Shelley, i listened for a number of months but he became a caricature. Facts he didn’t want to accept he just dismissed even when someone gave them from a source. He has no temperament for doing a live show. I knew he was accepting payments from the GOP, The Redding Report only proves what i believed. Reminds me of Armstrong Williams. Hey Shelley, O’Reilly and Hannity will welcome you with open arms. You have a open invitation to go on those shows and vent your dislike of Sharpton, Jesse, Malcolm, Martin, Dubois, Garvey, Kunta Kinte, and everyone else. Bad move by WAOK. As it is, most of their on-air talent is mediocre; their production value is sub-par; and their advertising (or lack thereof) spoke to this.

Dismissing Shelly Wynter was the worst move they could make. I’m not 100% in agreement with Wynter on many issues, but at least the brotha made people think critically. He had the capacity to bring Black radio out of the AM basement, and into a position of power and influence. None of the other personalities at WAOK possess that ability.

In the end, Wynter may have made people think too critically. Perhaps the powers-that-be at WAOK just couldn’t have that.

Enjoy the trappings of ghetto radio, WAOK. I’m done with you.

How can a radio station NOT be regulated by the FCC? All stations have an FCC license-they have to apply for one or else by classified as a pirate station or a Sirius radio channel. FCC needs to investigate this station.

I’ve known Shelley Wynter for years (dating back to his days on WCLK) but never regularly listened to WAOK before his arrival.

I was a guest on Shelley’s show multiple times and at times we had opposing views and perspectives on some topics and issues. However, I’ve always had total respect for Shelley and his willingness to shed light and bring much needed awareness, truth, healthy discussion and divergent perspectives to key and important topics and issues facing our communities.

I look forward to Shelley continuing to address the victims mentality, higher levels of crime and imprisonment, generational dependency on the government and social programs, poorer performing schools and inadequate educational achievement, a lack of self-sufficiency, limiting one’s options politically and thus having votes taken for granted, consumers vs. savers (investors) mentality, etc.

Therefore, his departure from WAOK (with its limited reach and poor signal) will likely end up being a tremendous benefit to Shelley and a much larger audience of new listeners that he will likely reach through a bigger stage afforded by his next employer.

It’s a shame Shelley is gone. To all of the people who think he is a conservative Republican sellout, remember that he was supporting Barack Obama long before it was popular. Was he wrong for questioning the mentality of victimhood that has affected us for so long that many of us don’t know how to think any other way? I hope he gets another show in the Atlanta area. He gave these “black nationalist, blame the white man, America hates blacks” callers more time on the air than was necessary. If a city with as many affluent and solidly middle class blacks as Atlanta can’t get anything other talk than “blame whitey”, then what does that say about us and what the media powers think of us? Good luck Shelley.

I just exchanged messages with Shelley and he responded with the following status update below.

“I am part of a national internet radio company launching in June … will be airing on June 15th M-F 1p-4p … should be great, will be reaching out to you to get word out around that time.”

Once available, additional details will be posted on our global web portal - http://www.mpnsite.com.

Kudos to Symone, I feel exactly the same way, Shelly is already being greatly missed, Derek just doesn’t do it 4 me,I don’t listen like I used 2 when Shelley was there, and with Lorraine when u don’t agree w/certain topics she will cut u off& go to the next caller especially on the Gay issue WAOK has once again made a bad decision, Shelley really informed us all regarding the insides of politics and helping me to understand it better than I ever have, DB lacks that gift,I truly looked forward to 2-6pm well not any more w/WAOK, I guess Derek needed a job after Shirley laid him off, so somebody put in a good word, wonder who it was?…….We love you Shelley and waiting for June 15, 2008 God Bless

I used to look forward to Shelley’s wit, intelligence and challenge to conventional wisdom about Black world view. His perspective on local and national politics was refreshing. He also brought on great guests that may normally not be exposed to the Black listening audience or visa-versa. I will look for Shelley to go far as a talk show host - too bad for 1380 - I have lost interest and so have the folks I know who listened to his show from 2-6. Politicians are temporary and a dime-a-dozen, a good talk show host who can captivate whether you agree or not is rare.

All i have to say is I am absolutely amazed and outraged that WAOK chose not to keep The Right Side on the air. What a mistake. Listening to Shelly was the highlight of my afternoon. Easily hands down the best show on WAOK, in fact the best show on radio. The show inspired provocative and intelligent discussion. Something new to get folks out of the victim mentality. I say shame on WAOK and all you self indulging, complain about everything do nothing folks. Shelly you will be missed. WAOK will regret that they let a rising star go. Shelly I hope to catch you on a larger platform in the near future. As for WAOK, goodbye.

The dismissal of Shelley has a lot to do with him educating the public regarding Obama, I’ve listened to Derek only 3 times and he clearly is not a Obama supporter,I don’t care if he did allow them to use his name in a small capacity, u wouldn’t know it listening to him…one question why n the world would he invite Shahrazad Ali, an obvious ANGRY BLK WOMAN, who did not inspire me in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER as a blk woman, somebody hurt her BADDDDD, as far as Lorraine’s show, she talks out of both sides of her mouth, and disagree if u want u will get CUTOFF on certain topics….. Waiting on you Shelley for June 2008 We love you!!!!

Shelly good luck 2 you. I wish u luck. WAOK please get rid of Rob Wilson he is an embarassment 2 intelligent people. Instead of Shelly being let go, Rob should have gotten the boot. My 5 year old neice has better grammar. Rob humiliates his network people, degrades callers. Speaks as if he needs ‘hook on phonics’. He is a foul bully. Pathetic that Rob stays but Shelly goes. Puleese that’s not ok.

Thank You Cheryl Hampton…

I was shocked to see how many people can see through Mrs, White, she is just too phoney and her energy for women/girls is really negative.I feel she is entirely too old to call people “haters” just because someone disagrees with her and all that smacking she does is very annoying so I rarely listened to her.

She get on my nerve with her 2 cent analogies, you know like if someone disagrees with something, she says it’s about projection when infact it may be that people just disagree nothing more or nothing less. It’s obvious that Mrs. White know someone who owes her a favor because her skills on the radio are lacking.

I miss Shelley because he schooled those that craved the lessons, the other hosts dumb down people with the victimization.

I am going echo some of what has already been said. Dismissing Shelly was a loss to WAOK and not to Shelly, it is also a loss to the community because he created controversial dialogue that question the status quo. Now, with the exception to Rob Wilson; the station basically broad cast the same topics and opinions all day long to a certain group, instead of viewing issues from different perspectives and respecting those differences.

Rob Wilson is a bully who needs to go + he needs to only be on weekends if they must keep him. Shelly should have remained on his time slot. The only thing you can learn from Rob Wilson ‘hard to comprehend English and so so financial ABC advice is ‘I hope I never sound as challenge with the English language having been born in the USA, as Rob and have Rob take math 101, a lot of his so called advice he got from other sources, he didn’t think of it himself. The man is SO RUDE to people, scary, and sounds angry.I tune Rob’s 12 to 2 out totally. His anger problem, English problems, rudeness to others is whacked. Shelly will move forward.

I agree with the person that wrote this:

Sometimes you need a break from the whole “fight the power” thing, which is ALL that Coz Carson ever gave you (and Derek Bozeman will give you the same). People can knock Shelley for his ‘conservatism’, but he really isn’t a conservative, because he’s all over the place in his views. And that’s perfectly okay with me, because no one should allow themselves to be put into a box by a label. I just think he’d like to think he is a conservative…

The only time I have ever listen to WAOK was to listen to Mr. Wynters and that was because i was encourage to by friends for many, many months. And like many bloggers, I didn’t always agree with Mr. Wynters however I liked and respected him, therefore I became a fan of the radio station. Now that Mr.Wynters is gone I will no longer listen again. Mr. Wynters where ever you go know that you do have listeners that will follow. Until then I will go back to listening to 90.1FM.

I don’t buy it. There HAS to be more to this story, but mums the word when I call to inquire. I can’t imagine what reason WAOK / CBS Radio would have had to let Shelley go. Unless he was engaged in some outrageous illegal activity while at the station, there is absolutely NO excuse for this. The Right Side was, hands down, THE best talk show, on any radio station in our listening area. Shelley is a natural, with in-your-face, ride-with-or-against-me-or-get-run-over logic. The show’s topics were always cerebral. My guess is that those who hated the show weren’t really listening.

I take a couple of weeks off to go hang out at the beach, like any self respecting Libertarian, and I can’t find Shelley on WAOK.com, only to now discover that the most informative political talk show on the air anywhere, is no more… just damn… When Rob Wilson leaves next year, I know it will be time to channel surf back down the dial. WAOK’s Lisa Moser…gone… WAOK’s Rob Redding…gone… WAOK’s Captain Rudy Mack…gone… WAOK’s Cos Carson (I didn’t like him)…gone… WAOK’s Ralph from Ben Hill…gone (health reason)… WAOK’s Rose Scott(she knew too much about sports for the average WAOK manager & listener to feel comfortable)…gone… WAOK’s Spirit & Lacey…gone… WAOK’s Shelley Wynter…gone… WAOK’s Rob Wilson…planned departure… WAOK’s Listener “EARL” leaving right behind Rob Wilson… WAOK can cut off the transmitter when Rob leaves….

When we restrict our discussions to rehashing methods of black victimization and failure, we confine ourselves to repeat those same patterns. I enjoyed the intelligent debate and felt like our people needed it like the next breath of fresh air. WAOK should disclose what is behind this move of theirs. Please don’t give another bloody shirt waving host the opp to poison our minds with reasons why we can’t be successful. Nuff Said.

I have lived in Atlanta since 1990 and pretty much stopped listening to popular music in the 90’s and went totally talk. This past year was the first time that I began to listen to WAOK and 1380. I listed Shelley’s show on a ratings book I did back a couple of months ago. I even had my dials set in the car and truck. Useless now. It must be said that I did not always agree with Shelley, but loved and looked forward to the show. I hoped that Derek does well, but I will pretty much just let the numbers ride on WSB and Clark and Neal. I was squeezing Shelley in with Clark since he has always been great, but no need to play two numbers anymore.

I thought Derrick Boazman was just filling in for Shelly until he mentioned something about Shelly not being there anymore. My curiosity got the best of me, so I googled his name to find out what happened. I enjoyed listening to him in the afternoon and hate he’s not with WAOK anymore. I agree that he did have one of the best shows on the station. I’ve been listening to WAOK for years now and can honestly say that Shelly challenged his listeners to think outside the box. He will be missed!

Shelley Wynter was the bright spot in otherwise sea of self depracating liberal despair. The morning host, Lorraine, Derik Bozman and Bev Smith are all nauseating with thier “We jus a bunch of dumb negros, nobody likes us, and we need government and Democrats to take care of us”.

The one host that challenged people to step out the box and think, and WAOK succumbs to the pressures to drop him bcuz he doesn’t automatically cry “RACISM” at the drop of a hat.

WAOK has dropped Shelley as a host and lost me as a listner.

Wow, what a bad decision to get rid of Shelly. His shows were very informative and challenged you to use some critical thinking skills. Well, maybe the loyal listeners need to send letters to the station demanding that Shelly return or maybe stage a “boycott” against WAOK. Oh, where is Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson now….Well, the ratings are really going down now…..I will only listen to Rob Wilson. Bigger and better opportunities are coming Shelly’s way. Maybe, he will have his own station.

I hope that Shelley does well wherever he turns up next. WAOK is really out of touch by letting a good radio host such as Mr. Wynter go. When Shelley was on the WAOK format I would listen to his show often. Except for Rob Wilson’s show with your personal finances; the other radio personalities I don’t think can carry that station. The audience that WAOK caters to is very narrow and I believe that Mr. Wynter would do better with a larger mixed audience. I will miss hearing his perspective; I didn’t agree with everything he said but I found him very interesting to listen to. In my opinion, it is good to hear a black person with a different point of view.

WAOK is to narrow minded for a talent like him. I wish him well.

Rob Wilson is a joke. Good Riddance. Shelly wasn’t the best or worse radio host. He needed alot of grooming. But with that said. He was the best thing going on WAOK. Mrs. White needs to fade away with her dislike for women callers. Smart listeners with a brain of their own can tell quality radio hosts in the making or already there. White-NO-Rob-H$ll NO-Shelly-was in the making-Yes he was. I have nothing against DB but Why would they take Shelly off-what is the real reason. Shelly should be there and DB, give him a spot somewhere. Put a real deal Financial advisor on and take White off in the mornings and put a more open educated woman/man on. H$ll put the callers on, rotate them- the smart women/men callers(no victims) the ones with open educated views, who are moving forward. WAOK do you even care. Shelly does have a following so dont understand it.

These past few weeks speaks to the state of mind of many in our community!

How many of us would go on our jobs or to our customers and ‘demand’ we be allowed to break rules, be habitually late or absent, etc. Personal responsibility and good decision making skills are essential qualities. To be successful in any endeavor, whether as a business owner or employee, requires ‘negotiation’ and ‘sound judgement.’ Unfortunately, many of us reject our own people who possess the above qualities. That was all Shelley was attempting to convey.

I listened briefly to WAOK this morning and I was reminded why I no longer listen to White’s program.

If someone gives an opinion that she doesn’t agree with, she simply talks over the caller and gives a long diatribe.I have never heard anyone that is so phoney as White but I did like Wynters and I already thought process.

Basically Shelley’s show was “Find something wrong with Black people than jump on it for the next four hours.” A lot of times he talked like he wasn’t one of us, using third person pronouns and things. Then he would talk like we were better off for being kidnapped from Africa. Who knows what Africa would have been like if it wasn’t conquered by the European imperialists. When he first came on the air he didn’t even attempt to pronounce the Muslim greeting for Peace correctly. He said he was from Harlem. So I knew there was more to it than just pronounciation. Then his opinion of a Black man wearing Afrocentic clothing was just plain ignorance at its best. I had finally quit listening to his show so as to maintain a more positive attitude during the day. He was suppose to be a Black man yet he couldn’t even understand why Blacks voted in mass for Democrats over Republicans. Couldn’t he see that we voted for the lesser of the two evils? I am so happy he’s gone. Derrick is a strong Black man and he doesn’t just talk about all of the negative things we do. We like everyone else have faults but its not necessary to make a whole show out of them. Peace

I have been a listner of WAOK since the days of Zilla Mays, Piano Red and Zena Sears (1950’s). WAOK was relevant then because it provided (other than WERD) an outlet for black music and community service. Shelly Wynters was in the same tradition of those pioneers. He was creating a name for himself and presenting a view point we needed to hear. A view point of standing up and not begging, being a victor and not a victim. He made sound and rational statements and countered emotionalism with reason. He will be sorely missed. He had the type program where one would sit in their car in the driveway until a commercial break occurred so that you could run in the house and not miss anything. I am sure that Derrick is a good man but Shelly was a star who had something to say.

Well, I am happy Shelly is gone. He is an arrogant, homophobic, rude man. He never did his homework and all he did was read off of the Republican Talking points. It is okay to have different viewpoints but you don’t have to preach hatred and lies to back up that point. Oh, but that is how the Republicans and FOX news do it.

It’s awful that WAOK has removed Shelley Wynter. I used to really look forward to listeneing to him at 2pm. I am a regular talk show listener and he was the only reason I ever listened to WAOK. And what’s unbelievable is they’re trying to replace him with Derrick Boazman. Obviously the people at WAOK didn’t put much thought into this, because if they did, that in itself is a scary thought. I tried giving Boazman a try, but he’s to much of a bakwards thinking negro. I just simply won’t be listening to WAOK anymore.

Shelly made WAOK ok to listen to. Now Ive moved the radio dial. My 10 cents is remove Rob Wilson permanently, find some one who knows how to be intelligent sounding, talking and does not berate his four callers. Derrick Bosman should be on community talf with his keeping the brotha down rhetoric, and Lorraine White should go sit in the pulpit.

I didn’t agree with his views on the church, but was right on with his views on blacks that have victim mentalities and on politics. Waok lost me one time after firing Rob Redding, now they’ve lost me (at least in the afternoon/evening) for this one. BIG MISTAKE WAOK!!! He may have been controversial, but thats what creates ratings. This new guy you have wreaks. Can you say boring?

For people who keep requesting for Wynter to come back to the air, its not happening. Please check this out, it tells you what happened http://www.newsblack.com/podcast/podcastrecordings/rnrp2008/rnrp05252008.mp3

Good luck Shelley

I was surprised to see Shelly Wynter be taking off the air. I liked his program. It’s sad black talk stations have no diversity in opinion. This is what Shelly brought. The black community needs diverse opinion bad as ever. It is the liberal dominance in black politics that keeps us in a slavery like state in america. Truth be told many of our great past & present leadership were conservative and independent in their politics.

Thanks Beverly, I checked out the site and listened, so he made a bad decision, I’m sure in hindsite he knows now, but that still does NOT take away what he brought to the table@ WAOK every day he’s still missed and NO I DON’T WANT 2 C HIM RETURN, MY PRAYER IS TO HEAR HIM ON ANOTHER STATION WITH MORE WATTS PERHAPS SYNDICATION,@ ANY RATE I WISH HIM WELL AND I KNOW THAT HIS “STILL” FAITHFUL LISTENERS ARE PRAYING 4 HIM 2 RETURN 2 THE RADIO AIRWAVES ON ANOTHER DIAL,IT DOES NOT CHANGE MY VIEW OF HIM WHATSOEVER, DONNIE McCLURKIN SAID IT BEST “WE FALL DOWN BUT WE GET UP” WE LOVE YOU SHELLEY…”STILL”

WAOK you really mess this up.I liked Wynters because he was telling black people the real deal about how black politicians take Blacks for granite and how critical thinking was needed in the voting process.I think it’s laughable that the station actually look at Bozeman as a host,he is no where near Shelley in intelligence. Shelley was the only reason why I listened to WAOK,since he has been gone so have I.

I have to say that even though I disagreed with a lot of what Shelley believed in, at least he was interesting to listen to. He was very bright and articulate, and his shows were thought-provoking. Trying to listen to Derek Bozeman or Rob Wilson is excruciating. Their grammar is horrible. It makes me wince every time I hear them butcher a sentence with wrong verb tense and sentence structure. They both desperately need to work with an English teacher. It’s hard to take either of them seriously when their English is so atrocious. Shelley’s show was the only one I listened to, so I think the station did a great disservice by letting him go.

By Ryan

June 16, 2008 6:14 PM | Link to this

Okay, let’s call a spade a spade. First of all, you have Rob Wilson (the credit surgeon) who can barely speak English. Come on Rob, if you’re a financial specialist, surely you know when you say “60 cent”, that is not correct. It is “60 cents, not cent!” Speaking ebonics really limits your listening audience. Secondly, why does Lorraine White refer to herself as “Dr. White”. Does she have a PhD, or is she like all these other lame ministers (i.e. Juanita Bynum) in Atlanta who have no formal education, and just refer to themselves as “doctors”. If she wants to be honest, when people call her “Dr. White”, she should say, no, it’s “Ms. White. I’m not a doctor”. And what is with that crazy prophet/psychic she has on her shows? Give me a break. That guy is as big a fraud is she is. I tried to listen to her show the other day, and she was so shrill, and kept squealing and emoting every story. IT WAS SO ANNOYING!!!!!!!! Come on Ms. White, we already have to suffer through Monica Kaufman’s antics on the news. Your squealing is like listening to fingernails down a blackboard. I only listened to the station because of Shelley. He was the one bright spot in their programming. Now it’s just an amateurish low-class, ghetto production, and if you don’t speak ebonics, you’re pretty much screwed.

I know WAOK must be losing sponsors and money. I use to be a faithful listener of the station. I don’t listen anymore. The new host is horrible. Firing Shelly was the worst thing they could do. He was the Best host the station had to offer. I wish him the best. Please hurry and find a new radio home.

Yep, I tried to listen to WAOK this morning and it lasted 2 minutes. As soon as Lorraine mentioned her topic and her question: are black reps voting for Obama because whites accept him.. I had to turn. Yesterday I listened to Bozeman on the way home from work and I wanted to cry. I mean, the station has gotten to the point where it is a DETRIMENT to our society. Its an embarrassment, everyone except Rob. He may not be able to speak well, but he is trying to teach. The others just push nonsense. WAOK.. its time to revamp,

By Thorne

It is time for us all to realize that many in our community do not support Barack Obama because he doesn’t espouse ‘victim mentality’ politics.

Free Markets, Limited Government, Personal Responsibility and Educational Excellence are not concepts widely understood or accepted in our community. These four principles would alleviate most of the challenges we have and would empower us with the resources and knowledge to overcome the remaining vestiges of racism and discrimination IMO.

I just found out that Shelly has been dismissed from WAOK and I am so happy!!!!!!! He was awful, a Sean Hannity want to be. I even emailed him when I use to listen to him and told him just that.I have not listened to him for over a year now and was elated to hear that he is gone. HE was rude when callers backed him in a corner and he would hang up on them because he did not have the professional skills to deal with them.Good for you WAOK.

Shelley really tried to uplift the black community… but his strategy, attitude and persona was CONDESCENDING and WRONG! If he didn’t verbally attack his audience and callers, he could have more effectively reached the very people who could benefit most from his perspective and message. He needs to mature personally and professionally. “Disagree without being disagreeable”!!! Too bad he never took the advice. Derrick’s show is more substanative and I can actually listen the full hour of my commute home, rarely without disappointment and/or disgust. Good luck to them both.

Hey KW Shelley “did” uplift the black community in so many ways especially concerning this election and if u think that Derrick’s show is informative then u must not be from originally Georgia, and did u mean the word ” SUBSTANTIAL” :) Blessings to Shelley not Luck, he’s doing quite well and any others who has left the so called black WAOK, remember it’s NOT BLACK OWNED AND HAS NOT BEEN SINCE 10 OR 15YRS AGO, I’M BORN AND RAISED RIGHT HERE IN ATLANTA, GA SO I KNOW.

To: Shelley W. WAok was a stepping stone for the next level. I have enjoyed listening to you on the air waves. You have challenged us to think out-side the box. On the otherhand, to the talk radio hosts and hostees, morning ,noon , and nite show. I salute you all for being that bacon of light. Back to Shelley books for reading Reposition Yourself by Bishop T.D. Jakes and Become a Better you by Joel Osteen. When visited Atlanta I will still listen to Waok. Peace unto you

I just had to vent again.I surfed over to WAOK and heard that fool Bozeman and once again he was on bash Barack patrol.WAOK ought to be ashame that they have masqueraded that clown as a talk show host. He’s stupid and he caters to stupidity and a lot of black peeps just eat up his victimization.

I know that he used to be some type of politician and his district definitely got it correct when he was voted out because he’s exactly the type of so called politician that Shelly talked about that keep Blacks down because all he does is tell people what they want to hear instead of what they need to do.

I laughed as hard as a thousand fools when I heard that his show is called “too much truth”.

Shelly was like Wayne Williams, he acted like he hated his own race. I was surprised when he announced he was supporting Obama! Shelly reminds me of Armstrong Williams, self hate. Sometimes we need to look at the man in the mirror and have compassion, I am not looking for a handout, but we should not constantly berate our black brothers and sisters. Yes, tell people when they are wrong, but you MUST also praise. When people are constanly criticize they learn to condem. Soften up Shelly, show some love.

Does WAOK realize how wonderful a station it has? Obviously it does not.Does Atlantans realize what a wonderful town and the opportunities that WE have? How many cities have a FUBU radio station or city? I am in Pittsburgh let me tell you AWFUL believe me.

I tried many times to tune Shelley(if you were a true listener he would at sometime P** YOU OFF) out but found myself tuning back in the next day to listen for something profound. Nobody can host a perfect show everyday but I want to believe that he tried. I want to believe that the listeners of WAOK care and love their communities.

If the station management is smart it will listen to listeners and fine tune its approach. How special could it had been Live with The Right Side and The Left Side. I BELIEVE THAT SHELLEY AND DERRICK BOZEMAN WOULD HAVE MADE GREAT CO HOST.

WAOK IF YOU READ ALL MESSAGES POSTED ON THIS SITE IT OBVIOUS THE STATION IS DOING SOMETHING WRONG. GREAT IDEA OF BLACK TALK SHOW CONCEPT BUT MAKING THE LISTENERS ENGAGE YOU ARE FAILING. BEING INDIFFERENT AND QUIET IS A MISTAKE!

There is a God,and thank him that that self loathing porch monkey for the Right is gone and replaced with a real social intellectual.Just like Juan Williams,Joseph C. Phillips and so on, Shelly is an overcompensating social misfit that think white folk actually like him because he says what they are too coward to say.And like Boortz, Hannity,Rush and the Uni Bomber,if these turds had gotten a date in high school they would be Liberals. And if the rest of you pin heads were really happy kissing Massa Charlie’s back side and licking his knee caps so much, why bother listening to black people radio, just listen to the right wingers.

Good job debating Mr. Harris, he is a very opportunistic man. What he did at the McCain rally is great for his career. I have no doubt he believes he is a conservative but those earrings makes him look like a liberal “Dude”. Having said that, I have nothing against liberals or hippies. I’m a registered democrat and I have liberal views on many issues
