We believe RP was one of a group of
conservative Democrats who supported Gore in the 1988
primary. Tennessee’s Gore staked out the conservative
Democrat ground that year. We have no record or
recollection of any leadership position. That was a notion
pushed by Sharp in 1998 to defend his role as Texas chairman of
the 1988 Dukakis campaign.
RP said he voted for GHWB in the 1988 general
election. He switched parties in 1989.

One more q: As far as I can tell from news stories at the time,
Perry and his campaign did not dispute Sharp's references in
1998 to Perry chairing or co-chairing or vice-chairing the Gore
effort in 1988. Why not?

We did not access to information about the Gore 88 campaign organization and therefore 10 years later could not definitively say one way or the other.
